2018 RAM 1500 vs. 2018 Ford F-150
Posted on July 31, 2020
Many people shopping for a pickup truck look at the 2018 Ram 1500 as well as the 2018 Ford F-150. Both have their strong points. However, you must decide which will serve your needs and wants best. To help with that, read this professional comparison of Ford Trucks vs. Ram Trucks compiled by the team at North York Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram.
Performance
One of the biggest reasons you need a truck is raw capability. While both pickups can haul and tow heavy items, only the Ram 1500 can use the might of diesel power. The available 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V-6 puts an impressive 420 lb.-ft. of torque in your command, and it's available at 2,000 rpm.
Thanks to the solid design of the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel, Wards named it to the venerable 10 Best Engines list for three years in a row. Not only does the engine deliver plenty of capability, it runs efficiently and even has a recommended oil change interval of up to 16,000 km. That means more time working and less time in the service bay.
You don't need to sacrifice comfort for performance with the Ram 1500. A standard multilink coil spring rear suspension soaks up bumps, but handles big loads with ease. The heavy-duty shock absorbers combine with large springs for impressive damping resistance, and in turn less wheel movement up and down. This feature isn't available for the Ford F- 150.
If you want even more incredible performance when hauling or towing, add an active-level four-corner air suspension to the Ram 1500. It will automatically adjust as you load up the bed or hitch a heavy trailer. That means the truck rides even, so handling, braking, etc. are consistent. You can lower the ride height when loading or unloading items, something you can't do with the Ford F-150.
Practicality
Your truck should be the most valuable tool in your arsenal. With that in mind, the Ram 1500 has some clever designs you can't get elsewhere.
For example, the RamBox Cargo Management System gives you two deep storage compartments on either side of the bed. Even when you have rocks, dirt, or whatever else loaded in the truck, you can easily access what you have stashed in the compartments. LED lighting helps you see at night, and drain holes in the bottom of each compartment mean you can throw wet gear or even ice with drinks in without worry. The Ford F-150 doesn't offer anything even remotely similar.
Technology
With either truck, you get an array of advanced technologies. Many of these features are available for both the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150, but some key differences do emerge.
For example, the Ford F-150 can come with a full-colour 8-inch infotainment touchscreen. While that's impressive, the Ram 1500 features an even larger 8.4-inch screen, making it even easier to see what you're doing. Plus, the infotainment centre in the Ram 1500 boasts Siri Eyes Free, something you can't get through Ford.
