Reasons You Should Service Transmission

Today's modern transmissions are extremely complicated and need specialized care and attention. These wonders of technology are made up of hundreds of parts that must operate together in precision to ensure optimum performance and timing. At CarHub, we are experts when it comes to all the transmissions available in new and pre-owned Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, RAM, and Fiat vehicles.

The transmission in your car, truck, or SUV works by delivering the power from the engine to the wheels of your vehicle. There are four types of transmission currently available, each offering something unique to drivers.

Manual Transmission - Also known as "stick" or "standard," this was the original type of transmission in most vehicles. It is both simple and trusty but can be difficult to learn and master. It uses a friction clutch that is operated by the driver's foot in tandem with a gear shifter. Though it does give you a great deal of control over the driving experience, is less expensive to repair, and can offer greater fuel economy, its popularity and availability dwindle with each passing year.

Automatic Transmission - Perhaps the most common transmission on the road today, the basic automatic transmission gives you the ability to choose from one of a few gears without the need for a clutch or much effort. Though you get less control and repair costs can be higher, modern automatic transmissions offer up to nine forward gears. It is also standard on most vehicles, so there is no extra cost.

CVT - The continuously variable transmission (CVT) may seem and feel like a classic automatic transmission, it actually works in a completely different way. Taking advantage of the latest computer technology, the CVT uses a complex mix of pulleys and belts to give drivers the performance they demand. The pluses of the CVT include better fuel economy and less chance of failure. The biggest negative might be the lack connection with the car.

DCT - The Dual-Clutch Transmission is a great mix of automatic and manual technology. While you can drive in a completely automatic mode, there is all the option of changing gears as you would with a manual transmission. You will often find the controls on the steering wheel, much like on a race or sports car. The downside to all this complex machinery is current the cost of repair and replacement.

No matter which transmission you find in your Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, RAM, and Fiat, it is subject to pressure, friction, and debris. This combination can easily lead to poor performance and ultimately a complete and costly failure. In fact, a regular transmission service will cost you an average of $150, while a complete transmission replacement, can run $3,500 or much more. The key, much like with the other components in your vehicle, is timely maintenance and service from a certified Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, RAM, and Fiat dealership like North York Chrysler.
