The transfer case is a gearbox found on most 4-wheel drive and All-Wheel-Drive vehicles. It controls the distribution of power from the transmission and sends it to both the front and rear axles.
The transfer case is subject to heat and friction, which over time will cause the additives in the transfer case fluid to breakdown.
