Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, RAM & FIAT Air Conditioner Care

"A marginally operating system will fail in hot weather. Have the system examined by a qualified technician" -FCIC, Getting Ready For Summer.

Your Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, RAM or FIAT's air conditioner not only increases your driving comfort, it also increases your security (no need to keep windows open) and your visibility (demisting and defogging)

So how do you take care of your AC between scheduled maintenance services? The good news is you don't have to do much. On the first warm spring day, just turn your AC on and answer the following questions to determine if it is working properly.

Is it Blowing Air?

If there isn't any air blowing from your vents, you may have a broken blower motor or maybe just an electrical circuit problem. The cure could be as simple as replacing a blown fuse or it might be something more serious. You will need to have your service specialist investigate this.

Is it cooling enough?

Check under the hood for any debris or leaves around the AC intake near the base of the windshield or radiator. This can block flow of air to the cooling system.

Pick out loose leaves or use a water hose to remove debris from the radiator area and try your AC again.

Poor cooling may also indicate a mechanical problem such as a bad compressor or compressor clutch, or your AC could be running low on refrigerant. Speak with a service specialist before the weather gets hotter.

Is there water in the passenger's foot area?

Check for any moisture below the heater. This generally indicates a blockage or a leak in the AC drain system. Your service specialist will be able to locate and fix the leak.

Is the air stale or musty?

If the smell only occurs when your AC system is running, it is likely that a fungus, pollen, or other odor-reducing allergens have made your AC system their new home.

These allergens are attracted to warm moist plenum chamber of your AC system and they multiply rapidly. When you turn your AC, they are blown into the air that you and your passengers breathe.

See your service specialist for a check up. You might want to use and air deodorizer to minimize the smell in the meantime.

If the musty smell is present all the time-not only when your AC system is operating- it is possible that rain or water is leaking into your vehicle.

Is there an unusual noise?

If you hear a screeching noise coming from your AC system (when it is turned on) your vehicle may have a slipping belt or a seized compressor or compressor clutch. See your greater Toronto Dodge, RAM, Jeep, Chrysler and FIAT service specialist for a professional assessment.
